Co-owner Lance has traded in the long hours of training for triathlons for the long hours of running Sole Sports. He raced as a professional triathlete, specializing in the Ironman distance, never finishing over 10 hours. Prior to getting into the running business back in 2002, Lance worked as an engineer in the semiconductor industry. Ever the engineer, Lance is constantly working to refine Sole's efficiency, and his passion is for streamlining store operations and the website. Nevertheless, Lance also enjoys fitting customers into their ideal shoes and offering up his wealth of knowledge and wisdom for all things running and triathlon.

How long have you worked at Sole Sports? What is your favorite part about working here?
Since September 2011. My service at Sole began while I was a varsity runner at the nearby Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, AZ. I enjoy the local community and reaching out to my customers to ensure their satisfaction. Each shoe fitting is like a unique puzzle for me to solve. I love to see my customers excited about the journey they're on or about to begin.

How long have you lived in AZ? Where are you from originally?
I am a first generation Arizonian, born in 1995, and take great pride in the Southwest (and our weather).

What is your favorite distance to run?
Long runs (10 to 15 miles) are what I enjoy the most because I can get into a groovy stride for 1-2 hours. They build strength and allow you to forget about your day--you can get a lot of thinking done, more so than in the shower.

What is your most memorable race?
Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in San Diego, CA. I was late getting to the first corral after warming up and I clipped my upper left arm around some fence. I ran that race with blood running down my arm and now I have a gnarly scar to prove it. I think my race photos are still somewhere online.

What are some of your hobbies / interests other than running?
I enjoy all sports, weightlifting, basically staying active; I'm a huge skier in the winter and an avid golfer in the summer. With my love for supporting the community, I try to find a local eatery wherever I am. During my downtime, I like to watch movies, make playlists on Spotify, and be outside. I'm currently completing my degree in Biomedical Engineering and I am developing my candidate profile for a career with a medical devices company.

What is your favorite place you've traveled to?
The Northwest during the winter. I went on a two-week skiing and sightseeing adventure through Seattle, WA, Vancouver and Whistler-Blackcomb, BC, Canada.

What else would you like the world to know about you?!
I try to play Settlers of Catan--my favorite board game--every weekend.

 Emmet Acebedo

After working 60-hour weeks at an engineering job, hidden inside of a cubicle, Emmet enjoys the constantly changing atmosphere at Sole Sports and the freedom to come up with unique ideas. He has been trail running for over a decade and is easily found leading many of our group runs and Sole Sports events.

What is your favorite trail to run here in the Valley?
Tom’s Thumb—It’s long and away from city lights

Explain your craziest run you’ve gone on?
A three-hour run going up and down Camelback Mountain to help friend train for an ultra-marathon

Where is your favorite place you have traveled to?
Ireland—my brother and I traveled the country side.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
The power to heal

How long have you worked at Sole Sports? What is your favorite part about working here?
I'm in my 8th year. It goes without saying that Sole Sports is a great place to work; on any given day I get to hand out smiles and bask in the fact that I've educated a customer on the needs of their feet and sent them home with shoes that will make standing/walking/running a much more positive and comfortable experience.

How long have you lived in AZ? Where are you from originally?
I've lived in Arizona since 2000 and originate from a well-forested mill town in Connecticut.

What is your favorite distance to run?
I enjoy the 3k on the track the most (1.86 miles). I consider myself a middle distance specialist and even though I enjoy the mile, I'm not that great at it compared to my competitors. I lack natural born speed, but can carry on a daring, respectable pace for about 2 miles to 5k.

What is your most memorable race?
The summer of 2016 at the World Masters' Athletics Championships in Lyon, France. It was 4 PM and 104 degrees at the start of the 5k on the track. I looked around to my competitors from around the world and wished them well in their respective native languages. "Bon courage, buona fortuna, buena suerte, viel glück, good luck!" The officials were trying to get everyone to line up, but all these guys walked over from their place on the line and hugged me and shook my hand, with one of the Brits exclaiming, "Impressive, mate!" It was a moment that the nations came together, any egos were put aside, and the entire field realized they were just happy to be there and fortunate to compete. This one will be hard to top for me.

What are some of your hobbies / interests other than running?
I enjoy playing ultimate frisbee. I volunteer my time coaching at a local middle school and college where I impart my knowledge of running to young athletes and attempt to inspire a lifelong love for the sport in everyone with whom I work.

I enjoy studying foreign languages and learning new ones--a true nerd. I have a penchant for writing as well.

I geek out and log quite a few hours of video games every week to relax and calm my mind while presenting new challenges and scenarios for me to work through. Sometimes it's just fun to suspend reality and blow stuff up on the screen. It's quite freeing and a great stress reliever, actually. I also dabble in Rock Band/Guitar Hero and I'm not too bad at it.

What is your favorite place you've traveled to?
I go to Europe every couple of years and have unique and memorable experiences in each city I visit, but my favorite destination was Autun, France. It's a very small town where no one speaks English but I was shown around like I was a celebrity, touted as "the American" in town while I was there. Everyone was so accommodating and genuinely nice.

What else would you like the world to know about you?!
I'm a lifelong runner since 1989. One of my goals in life is to inspire runners of all ages and abilities to find out they love about running and continue to pursue it for all their years to come.

Working at Sole Sports, he loves the people he works with and the amazing customers that come in. He says there is nothing better than getting a new runner prepared to start their running career or helping existing runners progress and reach their goals.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned while running?
The biggest lesson I have learned while running is to check for weather alerts beforehand! There is nothing worse than getting stuck in a crazy Arizona haboob when you are only halfway through your run!

Where is your favorite place you have traveled to?
My favorite place I have traveled to is Alaska, where I took a helicopter ride onto a glacier, followed by a sled-dog ride through a snowy forest.

My best Halloween costume was dressing up as a cowboy in the fifth grade and carrying around a banana in my pocket, pretending it was a gun!

Jeremy Zarins
Jeremy relocated to Arizona from Cleveland in January 2011 to race and train away from the winter weather. Before coming to Sole Sports, he was an operations manager at a manufacturing company. I am a fourth generation native of Arizona. Needless to say, my roots are deep.

What is your favorite distance to run?
I just wanna run, because running is better than not running. Trail > Road

What is your most memorable race?
Well, if you race hard enough, you don't remember too much. My most memorable race would have to be the year that I paced my friend at the Leadville 100 MTB. He was seriously under-trained for the event. At the top of Columbine Mine (12,500'), the halfway point of the race, we were off pace and weren't going to make the 12 hour cut off. Jeff, was bummed, so I told him that we could regroup at the base of the mountain. We made up 20 minutes in just 10 miles of downhill. By the time we hit Twin Lakes inbound we were back on track and finished the race in 11:27.

Don't let a distance discourage you from running. Obviously you have to put in the miles, but don't let a distance stop you. Always be willing to do more.

The half marathon, mostly because I love the idea of seeing people in the race up ahead of me and slowly reeling them in over miles. It's truly one of the races I feel strong in.

What is your most memorable race?
My most memorable race was my last collegiate 8k. I ended up PR'ing for that race after having a bad week and just felt totally calm in it. What is your most memorable race?
I have done many races that are memorable for different reasons, but my favorite race to date was the North Face Endurance Challenge 50k in San Francisco.
